Unity House of Davenport will provide education and support to individuals with substance and behavioral addictions in a safe, semi-structured environment with access to additional resources for living abstinent from problem behaviors. The Volunteers of America's Unity House at 1436 south Preston in downtown Louisville is one of the few homeless shelters in the city where families can remain together. A waiting list currently exists for both therapy and housing services. In the renovated Lansingburgh location, which is larger and more accessible to clients than the previous site in Troy, Unity House anticipates being able to successfully assist more victims and survivors of domestic violence with improved and more dignified service delivery. Unity House offers several housing options so that adults with mental illness, people with HIV/AIDS, people who are homeless, and victims of domestic violence can live safely and self sufficiently in the community with dignity and independence. The youth wing of the building has a separate entrance away from the main offices of the Domestic Violence Resource Center. A drop-in center will allow youths ages 12 to 17 to engage in safe activities from to 3 to 6 p.m. Programming will include recreation, healthy relationship educational activities, and groups focused on life skills training.
